Sizing a furnace correctly in Caribou County is not a formality. Homes in Caribou County, ID run heat about ten months a year, from September through June. The heat exchanger, burner, and ignition system cycle through most of the calendar year, and a system that is undersized or improperly commissioned carries that imbalance across nearly every month it runs. A contractor quoting a replacement here works out the actual load on the house before specifying equipment, because an install that is even slightly short on capacity burns through components faster than the manufacturer's ratings assume. Get the load calculation wrong and the burner corrects for it every single day.

Existing ductwork is where a furnace installation either runs smoothly or gets complicated. Half the homes in Caribou County, Idaho were built in 1972 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Houses built that long ago were ducted around equipment with different airflow demands, different static pressure tolerances, and different fuel sources than what a contractor is dropping in now. A new furnace sized correctly for the load can still underperform if the trunk lines and branch runs were never built to carry what it pushes. The electrical is a secondary question; the duct system is where a contractor looks first.

What Gets Installed With a New Furnace

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, a furnace unit with attached ductwork running to a roof flue, and a dark shingled roof.

The furnace itself sits in a utility room, basement, or closet and is the unit that produces heat. A burner inside it ignites the fuel, a heat exchanger transfers that heat to the air, and a blower motor pushes the warmed air out into the home. That blower is what moves conditioned air through every room.

The flue pipe runs from the furnace to the outside, carrying combustion gases out of the house. Alongside it, the contractor installs a new thermostat on an interior wall, which is the control point for the whole system. A filter housing, usually built into the furnace cabinet or the return-air plenum just above it, rounds out what a new installation puts in place.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.
